Trust fund bad boy William Burroughs tried to get his hustle on in New Orleans in the 1940s, and just when things were looking up, he went down. Fell off the wagon, went to jail on gun and drug charges, and then fled the country to avoid a nasty stint in Angola. Next stop: Mexico, where he would accidentally kill his wife while attempting to shoot a glass off the top of her head. How’s that for an auspicious beginning to a literary career?
